Picking up nopales

Ancient Mexican cuisine was plant based. Nopales (cactus) was and still is one of the most essential ingredients on all Mexican tables and it is one of the healthiest of all.

Nopales are considered a superfood for its many healthy benefits

The way to cook nopales is key to get a crunchy and tender texture, with no slime at all. They are so delicious if just grilled, or you may cut them in strips and cook them until tender to add in sauces, salads, omelettes or casseroles. The variations are endless and it is ideal for vegans and vegetarians.

The nopal pads can be eaten raw or cooked, also used in marmalades, soups, and stews; as well as being used for traditional medicine or as fodder for animals. Nopales are generally sold fresh in Mexico, cleaned of spines, and sliced to the customer’s desire on the spot. They can also be found canned or bottled, and less often dried.
